Waste as Wealth Misplaced

"The Story of Stuff" is a little video that shares some pretty astonishing facts.

  • In just the past three decades, we've consumed more than one-third of the planet’s natural resources.

  • The US has 5% of the world's population, but consumes 30% of the world's resources and produces 30% of the world's waste.

  • Each person in the US produces about 4.5 pounds of garbage a day. That's twice what we produced just 30 years ago.

  • For every garbage bin you fill, 70 bins of waste were creating producing the goods you consumed!

Every object we throw away is made up of natural resources, of fossil fuel energy, and of people's lives and health. In a very real sense, "waste is wealth misplaced." Learn more about the 4 "Rs" of waste: Refusing, Reducing, Reusing, Recycling.
